Mzansi Meets Formula 1 on the Streets of Jozi
On Sunday, 6 October 2024, Katherine Street in Sandton was turned into a mini race track as David Coulthard, the British Formula 1 legend, brought the thunder with the iconic Oracle Red Bull Racing RB7. A whopping 25,000 petrolheads and fans packed the streets to witness one of the biggest motorsport events Jozi has ever seen.
The Red Bull Showrun wasn't just about fast cars and fumes—this was about bringing Formula 1 to the heart of Mzansi, and boy, did it deliver! Coulthard had the crowd hyped as he ripped through Sandton in the RB7, a car that’s basically a legend on wheels, having dominated the 2011 F1 season.
Speed, Smoke, and a Whole Lot of Donuts
With its 750 horsepower engine revving up to 18,000 RPM, the RB7 didn’t just roar—it screamed through the streets, leaving clouds of smoke and a whole lot of rubber behind. Coulthard showed off his driving chops with donuts, burnouts, and sprints that had the crowd buzzing.
“Bringing Formula 1 to the streets and feeling the crowd’s energy was unreal,” Coulthard said, visibly pumped after his first lap. “Jozi has mad love for motorsport, and it’s awesome to be part of this scene.”
Local and International Talent Reppin' Hard
But it wasn’t just Coulthard stealing the show. Mzansi’s own spinners took to the stage, burning rubber and representing South African car culture with pride. Samkeliso 'Sam Sam' Thubane, fresh off his signing as a Red Bull athlete, showed the crowd why he’s the king of the spin game. Alongside Vaatjie and Katjia, they took spinning to new heights.
For Sam Sam, it was a day to remember. “The motorsport fans here have mad respect for different car styles and drivers. Sharing the track with a legend like David Coulthard? Bruh, what an experience! We held it down.”And then there was Elias Hountondji, one half of the famous Red Bull Driftbrothers from Germany. This guy was on fire, pulling off drifts so tight, you’d think he was dancing with the car. The crowd couldn’t get enough of his daring moves on the narrow streets.
Bikes, Stunts, and Zola Budd Taxis—Only in SA
South Africa’s own Brian Capper and Lithuanian motorbike stunt rider ArÅ«nas ‘Aras’ Gibieža took things to another level with their insane stunts. From wheelies and stoppies to burnouts, these guys had the crowd on their feet. Gibieža, known for defying gravity, made it look like child’s play as he rode through Sandton with ease.
But it wasn’t just about the stunts. In true South African style, comedians Mpho Popps and Jason Goliath brought the vibes with their hilarious entrance in a Zola Budd taxi, giving the crowd something to laugh about in between all the high-octane action.
Sandton Lit Up with Good Vibes
The event wasn’t just a motorsport showcase; it was a full-on Jozi street festival. With food and drink vendors dotted around, fans had more than enough to munch on while soaking up the electric atmosphere. The day was all about families, friends, and motorsport lovers coming together, making it an epic outing for everyone in Sandton.
And while the engines were roaring, the city’s economy was also getting a boost. Hotels were packed, and businesses around Sandton were buzzing with activity. Mayor Dada Morero and Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie both pulled through to support the event, with McKenzie hyping up the impact of motorsport on job creation.
“From ekasi spinning to the streets of Sandton, we’ve come a long way, but this is only the beginning,” McKenzie said. “Thanks to Red Bull South Africa, we’re turning spinning and motorsport into an even bigger deal—and that means jobs for the youth. It’s time to put SA on the global motorsport map!”
The Future of Motorsport in South Africa
As the dust settled and the engines cooled down, it was clear that the Red Bull Showrun had achieved something special. Not only did it bring Formula 1 back to South Africa’s streets, but it also celebrated local talent and gave a massive nod to SA’s rich motorsport culture.
With Coulthard, Sam Sam, and the rest of the international and local crew lighting up Sandton, the Red Bull Showrun 2024 will be remembered as a game-changer for South African motorsport. And who knows? Maybe this is just the start of more F1 action coming back to Mzansi.
